Blending stumps

A gift for my dear friend. She's a freak ;p

Reference photo was terrible. I had to imagine all details. I also have a lot of trouble with black background. I should start using black pastel or change paper to more smooth.

Tell me how do you achieve real black in your drawings, please!

great drawing!
Just use 8B with maximum pressure for the background. Draw max 2cm lines, hope this helps...

Really great drawing! I avoid black backgrounds, can never get it right. Used charcoal before but its messy and I usually screw it up:)

amazing portrait, i really love it!! :woohoo:

I use a 3B mechanical pencil to achieve black, lots of layers and small circular motions, i find the mechanical pencil much better than the even darkest wooden pencil, paper i use is extra smooth bristol board.

When I imagine 3-5 layers of mechanical pencil on large area with circular motions, I get stomach-ache :/

Amazing picture, the skin looks so real and great job on the hair!

I was always taught that there is no "real" black in life so going for a "real" black in a drawing would give it a fake look.

Actually, that is one of the main reasons why I am not a big fan of graphite. There's just no achieving real black.
Pretty good drawing!

Awesome, the skin looks great! From what I was always taught there is no real black in life, so going for real black in a drawing gives a fake look...

skin is sooo smooth :iconimconstipatedplz: , real black , ah, easy , good quality 8 or 9b graphite , the one i have doesn't make the surface of the paper shiny , metallic , it doesn't reflect light at all . search and buy

wow wow wow! i thought this was a photograph, it's so amazing!!! the eyes are stunning, and i love the detail to the hair; you have got it spot on! well done with the shading too :) You have done well with the background, as i have the exact same problem when using pencil, it's quite irritating. i have been suggested using charcoal, but i couldn't tell you if it works well, because i haven't had the chance to try it. but that might be your best bet :D
